Laugh It Up — NWA...

December 29th, 2011

This may be remembered as the year the comedy scene exploded in Northwest Arkansas. Although the standup scene in the area has enjoyed many brief bursts of attention before, it found renewed growth this year.

Just this year, all of the sudden, it came out of nowhere,” says Roger Haak, public events coordinator for the UARK Bowl event center on Dickson Street, which books many comedy acts.

The scene grew on many levels this year, from those performing their first-ever sets to those whose names can be found regularly on marquees and in televised specials.

After hosting a similar event at another Fayetteville club, local comedian Troy Gittings early this year launched an all-comedy open mic night at West End in Fayetteville. Each Tuesday night, about a half dozen amateur comedians of various talent levels and styles gather to tell jokes.

Gittings also organizes the Fools on Parade comedy team, a group of standup comediansthat have performed several times at the UARK Bowl, the de facto home for comedy in the area. Similarly, the Expendables of Comedy, a group headed...

Bowl then Ballroom then Bowl again.

October 17th, 2011

Didn’t you guys used to be the UARK Ballroom?” We get that a lot, and sure, it can be a bit confusing since we are technically a “ballroom.”

Have you read our history page yet? If you do, all the pieces come together and suddenly make sense, like watching a Tarantino flick.

Our building has gone through a lot of different names and uses, but originally there was a bowling alley on the bottom floor and a ballroom on the top floor. We were THE hip-happenin’ place on Dickson, and we want to keep that memory alive. We’re still keeping the good times rolling! Have you not seen our upcoming events? It speaks for itself.

We may not be a bowling alley anymore, but technically you’re “bowled” over with laughter when you see Phunbags and the Comedians of NWA. And with all the dancing from our wedding receptions, private parties, and concerts from Fayetteville Jazz Collective and Calle Soul, the spirit of the “good ol days” lives on.
